Being in New York State, it’s unsurprising that the winter brings a lot of snow fall to Rochester. Whilst it can reach up to 50 inches of snow over the course of the year, this never overwhelms, but instead brings a vivid white Christmas, adding to the atmosphere of the festive season. This, paired with the beautiful buildings and nature surrounding, make it the perfect city to spend your Christmas in Rochester. What with the boutique hotels in Rochester NY offering brilliant deals on rooms, there is more reason than ever to visit the area during the Christmas period. Below are some of our highlights in Rochester over the Christmas period.
Sweet Creations at the George Eastman Museum
Every year the George Eastman Museum is filled with cute examples of local artistic and cooking talent. The unique displays of specially made Gingerbread Houses really add a festive edge to the museum, especially with the wide range of housing styles, beautiful foodstuffs and Christmas themed decorations. At the end of the exhibition, usually in mid-December, the creations are put up for a silent auction and make quite the family treat, if you can bring yourself to eat them!
The Nutcracker with the Rochester City Ballet
The nationally renowned Rochester City Ballet is responsible for the yearly presentation of the Nutcracker Ballet. Accompanied by an orchestra, the Ballet puts on this festive traditional dance show at the Eastman Theatre, where it is seen by thousands of people. What would Christmas be without the Nutcracker, one of the seasons most nostalgic shows. You can catch the Nutcracker from the 21st to the 25th of November but book your tickets soon as these performances tend to sell out rather quickly.
Holiday Music and Light Show at the Garden Factory
Every weekend from the 24th November to the 23rd of December, you’ll be able to find the Garden Factory’s festive light show and funfair. This is a great day out for adults and children alike, incorporating dazzling Christmas lights with funfair rides and petting zoos. With competitions, food stalls and even a working model train set, you’ll be coming back weekend after weekend. If you’re visiting with kids, make sure you don’t miss the Santa’s Grotto, where the kids can meet St Nick himself! Whether you’re looking for a fun way to spend the day with visiting family or your visiting the area for the first time yourself, the Garden Factories unique Christmas fair is a brilliant way to get festive.
Christmas Tree Farms
Visit one of Rochester’s Christmas Tree farms and pick up a great value tree to suit your needs. Even if you don’t need a tree because you’re staying in other accommodation, the many farms based in the Rochester area will give you a great way to see how these beautiful pines are grown, whilst giving you a taste of the rich rural life of the New York area. Local farms to Rochester include the Christmas Tree Farmers Association of New York, the Stokoe Farm and the Darling Trees Farm.
Christmas at the Rochester Hotel
Last but certainly not least, why not spend Christmas at the Rochester Riverside Hotel. With a wide range of suites available for families and couples, the hotel is festively decorated during December, whilst also serving up great food at the ROC Burger on Main. With great links into the city and spacious, luxurious rooms to enjoy, a Christmas at the Riverside is definitely one to remember.
