Hitting the Ice: An A-Z of Ice-Skating Venues Rochester

For families visiting the city of Rochester in the coming colder months – and especially in the run up to and actually over the Holidays – the idea of throwing on a pair of skates, popping on to a rink and enjoying a session of skating has a real appeal. Not least because in terms of both indoor and outdoor skating and at venues ranging from purpose-built arenas, to downtown attraction venues and seasonal fairs, Rochester has more than its fair share of rinks to choose from this autumn and winter…

Bill Gray’s Regional Iceplex

(2700 Brighton-Henrietta Townline Road, Rochester, 14623)

First up is ‘BGRI’, a 170,000 sqft multi-sport participatory facility – like a few in this list, it has to be said – but it’s undeniable draw is offering up a cheap, enjoyable environment for the whole family to go skating. Ideal for a simple skating excursion or a special occasion like a birthday outing.

Fairport Ice Skate Rink

(Fairport Village Junction, Fairport 14450)

A fine, pleasant outdoor ice-rink that’s maintained by the Perinton Recreation & Parks Department, so you can be assured it’s well looked after. Skating is free here and, you may be happy to learn, no hockey’s allowed on this rink. Open hours: 10am-10pm daily.

Falleti Ice Arena

(22 Evans Street, Batavia,14020,)

Featuring a full NHL-sized rink (200 x 85 feet), this one boasts a maximum capacity of 480 people. Amenities at the venue also include concessions, party rooms and skate sharpening. Be aware that this indoor rink’s very hockey friendly; it’s the home venue for the Genesee Amateur Hockey Association (GAHA – Batavia Ramparts), Batavia Ice Devils, Batavia Notre Dame Irish and Batavia Men’s Hockey League. Open hours: 11am-10pm daily.

Holiday Village

(353 Court Street, Rochester 14607)

This year’s winter spectacular of a Holidays-themed multi-event venue will be hosting ice-skating for all comers – especially families – every Friday, Saturday and Sunday this December right the way thru to the 23rd of the month. Located right in the heart of the city, so ideal for guests looking to stay at the Rochester Riverside Hotel.

Manhattan Square Park

(353 Court Street, Rochester)

To be found just across the road from the famed and easy-to-find Strong Museum, this outdoor rink’ll be open in the colder months Sunday thru Saturday at the following times – 12noon-1.30pm, 3.40-5.10pm, 5.30-7pm and 7.20-8.50pm. The rink isn’t set to close until early March 2019.

Rochester Ice Centre

(80 Lyndon Road, Fairport, 14450)

Featuring a dual-sheet ice-rink that’s home to the Perinton Youth Hockey, Fairport, Victor, McQuaid Jesuit varsity and JV teams, this one’s also available – at very affordable prices – for all comers during ice-skating sessions.

Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Ice Arena

(Frank Ritter Ice Arena, North of Clark Gymnasium 1 Lombe Memorial Drive, Rochester, 14623)

Very affordably priced ice-skating that invites all is possible here every day of the week at specific hours (it’s best to check with the venue for precise opening times, although it’s often during afternoons from noon onwards on weekdays and weekdays. Renting of skates is possible and cheap.

Tuttle North Ice Arena

(350 New Campus Drive, Brockport, 14420)

The College at Brockport’s official ice arena opened all of 45 years ago and, well established as it is, features an indoor rink whose surface measures 185 x 85 ft (so almost NHS-size) and the spacious arena seats a capacity of 1,250; there are also five locker rooms and, most impressively of all perhaps, a skate shop that – for a small fee – serves up skate-sharpening and skate rental services. Also worth noting is that, on special occasions, the snacks concession stand is sometimes open, while several vending machines can be found on the first floor lobby of the SERC building near the main entrance of the arena. Be aware that opening times for the venue vary.
