Summer in NYC: family-friendly events and activities for June


No doubt about it; Rochester, NY’s jam-packed full of attractions, events and activities for family visitors throughout the summer, but should you be planning on taking advantage of any Rochester hotel deals in the month of June and looking to combine this with a short stay downstate in New York City, then you’ll doubtless want to know what’s going down in the Big Apple too. Well, there’s a lot, in fact – here’s our guide for just what might pique your interest…

  • BookCon(2nd-3rd June; Jacob Javits Convention Center) an outstanding contemporary book fair enabling visitors to interact with authors, publishers, celebrities and content creators; an event where you can be sure to discover that ‘storytelling and pop culture collide’
  • Art Fair(2nd-3rd June; Washington Square Park) featuring 120 artists on the sidewalks of University Place – free to attend! Note the event repeats in September.
  • Summer Stage(2nd June-27th September; various locations) Enjoy outstanding music, comedy, theater, dance, lectures, and films during this fabulous event held in the city’s numerous parks; be aware, though, that the (on the whole) free concerts prove very popular, so arrive early to avoid disappointment
  • Drums Along the Hudson(3rd June; Inwood Hills Park) This unique, spectacular and entirely free-to-attend Native American culture festival is set to feature traditional dance, drumming, crafts and foods to keep the whole family beguiled, entertained and, yes, fed, in addition to performers representing other cultures
  • Taste of TimesSquare (4th June; 46th Street, Broadway to 10th Avenue) one for the foodies, for sure; given it features international food from 40 different local restaurants and music from local bands, this is definitely an event worth making the trip for should you be staying at hotel suites Rochester NY
  • Concerts in the Park(12th-17th June; various locations) Hear classical music outdoors under the stars at the New York Philharmonic Orchestra’s Concerts in the Parks, followed by fireworks – note the indoor event doesn’t feature fireworks!
  • Soho Film Festival(14th-21st June; Village East Cinema) See a whole roster of diverse, fascinating and unmissable films drawn from from around the world at this year’s iteration of the esteemed annual film festival
  • Dance week(14th-23rd June; various locations) Register to take free dance and fitness classes from 35 separate but participating studios
  • Adventures NYC(16th June; Central Park) running from 11am to 4pm, this outdoor adventure-based activity day is perfect for energetic, athletic youngsters (and those maybe who ought to be more?); events include hiking, biking, climbing, fishing and even paddling, based around the Central Park bandshell area; free to attend but note that children under the age of 18 will need a legal guardian to participate in some activities
  • Pride Sunday(24th June; various locations) part of NYC’s Pride Week, this day-long-event will pivot around a Pride March down 5th Avenue (beginning at 12noon), which will be joined by an afternoon PrideFest fair on Hudson Street and Pride Island (from 2-10 pm at Pier 97), followed by fireworks
  • Jazz in July festival(25th-26th June; 92nd Street Y) A collection of world-class jazz artists, which is set to include soulful singers, piano partners and duelling drummers, will descend on the renowned multi-faceted cultural and community center on Manhattan’s Upper East Side for this unique and (bound to be) enthralling jazz event – so, why don’t you too?
