Spring into summer: why Rochester’s such a fine destination this time of year

Of all the times of year you might choose to visit and stay in Rochester, NY, it could well be argued that right now is just about perfect. Not least are both the weather and temperatures very comfortable, but with summer just around the corner, so many of our city’s attractions and venues (and, with them, all the Rochester hotels) are open, ready to welcome all comers to their very best exhibitions, shows, live acts, menus and glorious nature…

Museums and galleries

Fancy dabbling in some culture? Rochester’s brimming with cultural attractions. On the one hand there’s the George Eastman Museum, located in the grand home lived in by the innovator and founder of the Eastman Kodak company for many years. It has many a fascinating exhibition going on at any one time; plus, right now you might want to attend a tintype photography workshop to create a portrait via a very early camera (why not?). There’s also the acclaimed Strong Museum of Play, which is ideal for indulging your inner child; its exhibits being entirely related to play – for instance, there’s a wonderful array of old school video games. Moreover, you might fancy popping into the likes of Susan B. Anthony House (official home to the great social reformer), the Memorial Art Gallery and Gallery R.

A plethora of parkland

The Rochester area is home to in excess of 3,500 acres of parkland, believe it or not. And that’s not even to mention the plethora of state parks in the wider region, including the likes of Letchworth, Stony Brook and Watkins Glen. Whatever the temperature or nature of the weather, this time of the year is ideal for hiking, sporting activities or just an old-fashioned brisk walk while surrounded by all our diverse, beautiful nature.

Restaurants, bars and clubs

Nightlife’s big on the visitor’s menu in Rochester and nowhere are the after-dark choices better than in the downtown areas that are South Wedge and East and Alexander; here, you’ll comes across the likes of Murphy’s Bar, Butapub and The Daily Refresher, while for the young at heart the term-time favourites that are Lovin’ Cup, Shamrocks and Texas BBQ (located in Park Point) are perfect for a youthful, invigorating night out. Indeed, should you be going out over a weekend, you’ll doubtless find it hard to move for great deals on food and drink whichever venue you sample or, of course, if you’re planning to be in town for your nuptials, don’t forget to look into arranging your big day at one of the city’s unbeatable hotels, such as via our Riverside hotel wedding package.

A bustling music scene

Another way to make sure your night out goes with a bang is to check out a live music act. Our city, we’re proud to say, has a great reputation for live music – you’ll find you’re able to choose between everything from the biggest mainstream names gracing the Blue Cross Arena thru the glorious classical strains of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra to unknowns, yet-to-be-discovereds and up-and-coming bands at the Bug Jar and Lovin’ Cup. Our advice then is to definitely go online and have a search for what’s on; both via local venue pages and social media accounts of bands, artists and acts you follow – you never know who might be in town when you are!
