Come December 31, New Year’s Eve celebrations will be kicking off around the world. In Australia, spectators near the Sydney Harbor will be among the first to ring in 2020, with a world-class fireworks display marking the end of 2019 and the start of a new decade.
Major cities like Tokyo, Paris, Dubai, and London will, of course, have their own celebrations, including beach parties and bashes on barges. But what about New York?
Fortunately, there’s a ton going on throughout the state, which means both locals and visitors staying at hotels from the Riverside Hotel in Rochester to boutique bed and breakfasts in Brooklyn are in luck come New Year’s Eve.
Whether you’re looking for something intimate or extravagant, there’s something for everyone. Here are the top four ways to celebrate New Year’s in New York.
New Year’s Eve in Times Square
The celebration that takes place every year in Times Square needs little introduction. It’s one of the biggest anywhere, with over 1 billion (yes, billion!) people around the world tuning in to watch the ball drop. Of course, that’s on top of the 1+ million who watch in-person.
Join the crowds of people yourself and enjoy live music, celebrity appearances, and the unbeatable energy of New York City at midnight.
Romantic Weekend in Rochester
If you prefer something a bit more laid-back, skip Times Square and instead make your way to Rochester. We’ve already put together a list of the most romantic things to do in the area, which you can read here.
There are also dozens of special events on the 31st, including plenty of laughs at Comedy at the Carlson, live music at local restaurants, and themed celebrations at bars and clubs.
Best of all? Some of our Rochester hotel deals include breakfast! And – believe us – Rochester Riverside Hotel Breakfast is one of the best around, meaning you won’t even have to leave your bed for a bite to eat in the morning. This is key, especially if you had a big night before.
Niagara Falls New Year’s Eve Extravaganza
Less than 90 miles away from Rochester is Niagara Falls, where you’ll find a range of local events, from a New Year’s Eve Seafood Gala to Fireworks over the Falls. Do your research in advance and make arrangements soon, as many of these are ticketed and selling out fast.
If you’d rather cross a border for New Year’s head to Canada’s largest free New Year’s Eve event at Niagara Falls. Kicking off at 8 PM, you can expect fireworks, live performances from some of your favorite bands, and plenty of food and activities.
New Year’s Fireworks in Lake George
Another event that promises plenty of colorful explosions, New Year’s Fireworks in Lake George is perfect for families or couples looking for a festive way to welcome 2020. You can watch from the shore, a cruise ship, or your own boat, whichever you prefer. But, no matter where you choose to watch, the display will one to remember.
