3 Museums in Rochester Kids and Adults Must Visit

If you’re travelling with kids in tow, one of the most important – and equally difficult! – parts of planning the trip will be finding activities that are fun for the whole family. Why? Because children and adults (and especially teenagers!) are interested in different things. What a 6-year-old finds entertaining would bore a 16-year-old to tears and what piques mom and dad’s interest might have a toddler sulking with boredom.

So, what are parents to do?

Fortunately, in Rochester, New York, there are plenty of things that the whole family can and will enjoy during your stay here at the Rochester Riverside Hotel. Our top pick, though, is touring the local museums.

While there are dozens of museums in and around Rochester, we’ve put together a list of our favourites for all ages.

The Strong National Museum of Play

strong museumThe Strong is one of the largest history museums in the country…it’s also one of the most fun. Filled with hundreds of collections all dedicated to the history and exploration of play, kids and adults will love getting lost in this palace of toys and interactive displays.

Make sure you check out The Strong’s website for current exhibitions and events and, even if you’re just in town on business, be sure to take a break from work and meeting rooms in Rochester and let your inner child out to play.

Address: 1 Manhattan Square Dr, Rochester, NY 14607

Memorial Art Gallery

Get the whole family’s creative juices flowing with a trip to the Memorial Art Gallery. While kids and adults could explore the gallery’s collection of over 12,000 items together, you might be better off splitting up.

The museum hosts Kids Create workshops every Saturday from 1-3PM, allowing kids to work on creative projects (tools/supplies provided!) while their parents check out the art and exhibits.

Win-win!

Address: 500 University Ave, Rochester, NY 14607

Artisan Works

artisan work rochesterIf your kids pout at the very mention of a museum, you’re probably best off taking a trip to Artisan Works. The venue’s mission says it all: it’s ‘a place where people experience creation and inspiration’. You can think of it as a living, breathing exhibit, constantly changing and evolving. This, of course, means it’s difficult to say exactly what you’ll see when you’re there, but you can expect one (or more!) of the following:

  • A recreation of the Casablanca set
  • Antique classic cars
  • Live music
  • A giant, wooden pencil sharpener

See? Something for everyone! With that in mind, we recommend you have a big lunch (burgers, anyone?) at The Rochester Riverside Hotel Restaurant. That way, you and the rest of your family can spend a few hours wandering around the various rooms before moving on to the next stop on your itinerary.
